~Virtual Bento Boxes~

If there is one thing you can do ANYWHERE in Japan is eating. There is a huge industry in Japan dedicated to producing portable food that is easy to consume anywhere you are or go. One of the most popular of those are the "bento boxes". Each is a complete and self-contained meal, and it comes in a convenient small box that is usually microwave-able for extra convenience.

Bento boxes in Japan can be bought at convenient stores, supermarkets and even from vending machines that will heat it up for you on the spot. School students will bring their home-made bento boxes with them, so they don't have to go anywhere or spend money eating out during their rather short lunch breaks.

Food served in bento boxes is often quite well balanced and healthy meals, contrary to American fast food. Nonetheless, bento boxes are still considered as fast food in Japan, even when there is such a huge difference from what we understand as "fast food".

For example, all bento foods are never frozen. Instead, they are freshly prepared and packaged everyday around the country, and it's very unlikely you would ever buy a bento box from the day before. Japanese "fast food" is balanced and healthy, and that's why you rarely see fat people in Japan.
